Tips for How To Remodel A Kitchen On a Budget

A remodeled kitchen is a home improvement that can increase the value of your .....

One of the best investments a homeowner can make is to remodel the kitchen. This is the most important room in the house for many people. It is the focal point of the home; used for cooking, eating, and gathering. Consequently, though a great investment, a kitchen remodel project can be very disruptive to the family. And the length of the disruption can take as long as two or three weeks.

Planning Stage

Planning is a must in remodeling a kitchen. The homeowner must first identify the main objectives of their new kitchen. Then comes the research of the latest products on the market including: cabinets, countertops, sinks, appliances, and flooring. If the present kitchen is more than 5 years old, there will be a lot of new products and innovations to choose from. For example, Ceaser Stone is quickly surpassing Granite and Corian, as the premier countertop surface as it is extremely hard, elegant in appearance, and comes in many colors. It also has a consistent size and pattern so the fabricators can do more creative features for your kitchen. With cabinets, the trend appears to be towards lighter colors as they help the appearance of lightening and enlarging a room. In regards to appliances, the Stainless Steel continues to be the choice, with black appliances coming in a close second. And for flooring, vinyl or wood is the trend. Tile looks nice, however, it can be unforgiving in a room where things tend to get dropped. In addition, if there is no radiant heating planned for the floor and you live in a colder climate, tile will feel cold on the feet.

Sketch out the floor plan

Once the main objective of the new kitchen has been identified and the you have an idea of the products you need or want, then sketch out several possible floor plans. Keep in three important points in mind. One; professional kitchen designers suggest that you think about a triangle when starting your design. The three points of the triangle are the Sink, Stove and Refrigerator. Pay attention to the work space that you will need next to each of these centers. If you pay attention to this first point, you will be ensured of a good functional kitchen. Two; consider adequate walking areas (how many people will be in the kitchen working together) and space for an eating area, such as a table or center island. Do you have ample space included for chairs and for people to walk behind the chairs with people seated at the counter or table. Walking areas should be wide enough for two people to walk through at the same time. The sketches also needs to include dimensions, The Kitchen Designer will need this as the boundaries for the new kitchen remodel. Three and final, consider where the existing electrical outlets and power for the stove are. Assess whether additional outlets will be required and if existing outlets need to be relocated.

Visit the Kitchen Design Centers

After the sketches have been created, bring them to several Kitchen Design Centers or Home Improvement stores. Certified Kitchen Designers will then take the sketches and objectives and build them into a formal set of plans. After the Kitchen Designer has generated the plans, you will be able to get some additional ideas and approximate costs. Once you choose your supplier, typically someone from that company will visit your home and take very detail and precise measurements so that the plans can be finalized. In fact if they don't do this, then find a different supplier, otherwise expect additional costs and delays when the wrong size cabinets arrive on your doorstep.

When the cabinets are delivered, inspect the shipment to ensure that everything specified by the Kitchen Designer was dropped off. Again, this will help to eliminate delays and unexpected costs.

Cabinets: Out with the Old and In with the New

Remove the existing cabinets and countertops. This can either be the responsibility of the homeowner or the installers. This should have been agreed upon with the supplier at the time of puchase. If new flooring is to be installed, it is suggested that the install be done after the removing the old cabinets and prior to installation of the new ones. This will save time and money. This is especially true for sheet vinyl (Linoleum), as you will get a better end product with the cabinets sitting on the vinyl. Take extra precaution though to ensuret that your floor is not damaged during the cabinet installation. Using the cardboard that came with the cabinets to lay and tape on the floor is an excellent way to achieve this.

Installing Counter Tops

After the new cabinets have been hung, the countertops can be measured and templated. This task should be planned in advance so that it can be performed the same day or day after the cabinets are installed. This will help to keep your project moving forward. Once the templates have been taken, expect several days to a week for the countertops to be fabricated and installed. The bigger the kitchen and more complex the edges, the longer it will take to fabricate. While waiting for the granite countertops, you may consider having a temporary counter top with a sink and faucet installed so you can use the kitchen.

A remodel of the kitchen can be a huge disruption to the family home, but the completed project will quickly eliminate the brief inconveniences. As well, you have now increased the value of your home and updated the heart of the home.
